Why Passive Capture Changes the Equation

The difference between active and passive capture is not incremental — it is structural.

With Notion or Obsidian, your second brain contains maybe 5% of what you encountered. You have to decide in the moment whether something is worth saving. That decision has a cost: it interrupts your flow, it requires judgment about future relevance, and it fails silently when you forget.

Storage: Screenpipe uses roughly 5–10 GB per month depending on screen resolution and audio hours. A 1TB drive gives you years of history, but it's not zero.

CPU/battery: Continuous screen and audio capture uses resources. On Apple Silicon Macs, the impact is small (2–5% CPU). On older machines, you may notice it.

Not a note-taking app: Screenpipe is a capture and retrieval layer, not a writing tool. If you want to organize thoughts, write outlines, or build a knowledge graph, pair it with Obsidian or Notion for the active thinking side.

Which Approach Fits You

Choose a note-taking second brain (Notion, Obsidian, Mem) if you have a strong note-taking habit and want AI to help organize what you write. These tools are mature, well-designed, and work across devices.

Choose passive capture (Screenpipe) if your problem is not organization but recall — if you lose information because you never captured it in the first place. Screenpipe works best for people who process large amounts of information across many apps and want to search their own history.
